I'm not anti-meds, but...

What do I really think about medication

Hello! Welcome to my newsletter.

In this newsletter I will be sharing with you how I handle everyday life with ADHD, but without ADHD medication. I will share tips, tools and strategies for you to introduce in to your own life so you too can manage your ADHD holistically.

I wrote a post this week on LinkedIn about how I am not anti-meds.

Given what I do, and what I talk about, lots of people assume I am. It’s an easy assumption to make. But I think it’s really important that I make it super clear I’m not anti-meds…. However….

What I am against, is:

  • Medication being pushed as the only option

  • The risks not being shared and/or spoken about enough

  • Side effects not being spoke about

  • Medication shortages, and how poorly they’re managed

  • NHS waitlists, causing people to go private and spend £100’s, if not £1000’s

  • Although it can be seen, in a lot of cases, is that ADHD meds can be really effective for around the first 18 months, the effectiveness drops significantly after this

  • Bad big pharma practices (read more here or here)

When I was first diagnosed with ADHD I was basically told (or at least I was made to feel) that there was only two options.

  1. Take medication

  2. Carry on as I was

But that’s so far from the truth. And this is why I am shouting about managing ADHD without medication as loud as I possibly can.

There are so many reasons why someone chooses to, or not to, take medication. I won’t ever tell someone they should or shouldn’t, I’m not a doctor for one, but also it’s none of my business. What I will do though, is tell as many people as possible about what some of the other options are because we’re just not talking about it enough. Plus, my medication journey was absolutely disgusting, and I can’t be the only one.

With current NHS wait time for assessment and then titration, sharing methods to manage without medication is of benefit to everyone, even if it’s just a stop gap until they can start medication.
