ADHD, the drug free way
But first, what is self-care?
Self-care can refers to anything that you can do to keep yourself mentally, emotionally, physically, socially and spiritually healthy. When self-care isn’t practiced, it’s an invitation to feel crap and increases the risk of burnout.
Self-care can also be described as a decision-making process, which allows individuals to look after their health.
So why is self-care harder for those with ADHD?
As you may already know, decision-making for those with ADHD can be tough, even paralysing at times. This often leads to no decision being made, which leaves you feeling worse off, no self-care has taken place and you enter this cycle of guilt and shame. There’s also the health repercussions too, for example, I have suffered with my teeth over the years due to struggling with brushing them.
As well as our struggle with decision-making, self-care is often harder for those with ADHD as we don’t always feel like we deserve it or perhaps taking care of others seems more important. This lack of self-care could be due to emotional dysregulation, because having ADHD can make it harder to regulate both mental and emotional health.
Why is self care important, especially for us ADHDers?
Practicing self-care enhances our emotional wellbeing, it allows us to manage our ADHD symptoms and it also keeps us happier and healthier which ultimately means we call all live our best lives!
Introducing self-care routines into our daily lives can be super helpful, not just for the self-care element. Routine and consistency is excellent for the ADHD brain and structure to our days and weeks can help with time management, stress reduction, less procrastination and increased motivation.
